The Pliocene was an important time for the evolution of humans.  The first humanoid apes like Australopithecus ambled along in Africa and were far from being the dominant carnivores; they were preyed upon by cats like Dinofelis.  There were still more species of elephants and rhinoceroses than there are today.  This period was the beginning of the Pleistocene Ice Age.
